2025 Goals

Secondhand Stories provides a loving forever home to 22 rescued chickens, many of which have unique special needs. Our mission is to inspire compassion for chickens through rescue, advocacy, and education.

One of the ways that help us continue providing excellent care for our residents and sustainably grow our operations is by creating plans that challenge us to succeed. In 2025, we have established the following goals, which we are excited to share with y’all:

Animal Care & Infrastructure

These goals are set with the chickens’ wellbeing at the top of our minds. We want to provide them with improved shelter, offering more space and safety. We are also excited to expand our team and hope to welcome additional volunteers who will work directly with the chickens.

  • Onboard 1-3 volunteer animal caretakers

  • Fully install electricity in Ezra’s coop

  • Refurbish the 6th coop as a medical isolation coop

  • Create an expanded daytime run for the VegClub

  • Implement a 3-tier composting system

Advocacy, Education & Outreach

These goals are set with a focus on inspiring compassion for chickens across our community. Part of rescuing chickens is focusing on the individual care they receive. Another part is finding ways to advocate for the ones we cannot save. We’re very excited to launch several new initiatives this year, including:

  • Post two advocacy blogs per quarter (every six weeks)

  • Launch What The Flock Fridays educational campaign

  • Participate in VegOttawa Fest 2025

  • Host a summer open house in August with vegan-friendly vendors

  • Complete at least one presentation about sanctuaries in our rural community

  • Explore collaboration opportunities with animal protection organizations in Ottawa & surrounding areas

  • Work towards making implants more accessible for chickens in Canada

Operations

These goals are set to help Secondhand Stories grow into the next phase of our non-profit’s life. We plan to continue building trust with our supporters and, hopefully, reach new supporters.

  • Apply for charitable status

  • Reach 50 positive reviews on Google

  • Revisit and report on budget quarterly for transparency

We plan to keep you updated on these goals through our quarterly updates and our newsletter (make sure to subscribe here). Want to help us achieve our goals? Reach out to us!

All this would not be possible without the generous support of people like you.

If you're inspired to make a gift to our sanctuary, you can donate here.

We acknowledge that we are on the stolen lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Huron-Wendat peoples. We recognize our responsibility to listen, learn, and fiercely advocate for Indigenous sovereignty and justice. Rooted in Indigenous teachings of kinship, Secondhand Stories strives to honor all beings by creating a sanctuary where chickens are valued as individuals deserving of care, respect, and belonging.
